Clarifying when and why diagnostic tests are recommended
A visual system for four explainer videos helping patients navigate prostate cancer and UTI testing
Client: Mdxhealth
Scope: Illustration system, explainer video visuals
Focus: Patient education, diagnostic clarity
What needed to be solved
Doctors often introduce patients to diagnostic tests at moments of uncertainty. The information is technical, the stakes are high, and the context is rarely clear.
Mdxhealth needed to:
- Explain when each test is used
- Show how tests fit into real patient scenarios
- Maintain consistency across multiple videos
- Keep visuals simple enough for broad understanding

How I approached it
Rather than treating each video independently, I designed a shared visual language across all four, and I made sure the designs fit with brand color specifications.
Each illustration system:
- Uses consistent character styles to anchor recognition
- Introduces variation to reflect different patient scenarios
- Guides attention using simplified composition and directional cues
- Balances clarity with enough specificity to feel medically grounded
Altogether each video stands on its own, but the ultimate goal was to make each video read as part of a cohesive system of diagnostic test offerings.
This approach reflects how I structure complex information across projects.

How the system works
Because patients need all the help they can in understanding the details of diagnostic testing, the visuals follow a consistent structure designed to guide patients through diagnostic decision-making.
Core components:
- Entry point — introduction of the patient scenario
- Decision moment — where testing becomes relevant
- Outcome — what the test helps clarify

Entry point → Decision moment → Outcome
How the visuals are used
I developed these illustrations for explainer videos that help patients understand when and why doctors recommend specific diagnostic tests.
Each video applies the same visual structure, adapted to different diagnostic scenarios.
Prostate cancer risk assessment
Introduces when testing becomes relevant based on patient risk factors
Genomic score test for prostate cancer
Shows how genomic information helps guide treatment decisions
Risk of recurrence testing
Explains how follow-up testing supports ongoing patient management
UTI diagnostic test
Clarifies when testing helps confirm infection and guide treatment
This project reflects how I approach scientific storytelling in practice.
